Misty

Gripping the steering wheel, I sat in the car for just a moment, letting my mind slow down. I was in the school parking lot, but there wasn’t really anyone around because it was after hours. The shock of all the craziness was finally setting in. My life had always been pretty simple, just getting by and making it work. But now, I had no idea how to make it work. I didn’t even know how to come to terms with what was going on. There was so much to contemplate and no one to talk to about it. I could talk to Eric, but he didn’t know any more than I did and probably needed some comforting of his own.

I thought about all the events leading up to that night and everything afterward, and I still couldn’t figure out how my life had gone from boring to wild and crazy in the blink of an eye. Just two days before, I wasn’t even sure that I had made the right decision to move back to Galena. Everything was so quiet and besides my parents, I really didn’t have anyone. It was just like moving here for the first time when I was a teenager. I wasn’t sure if I would ever have any friends here, or even have a life here at all.

Then, out of nowhere, I find Eric Holbrook passed out on my porch, looking like he had been attacked by wolves. Little did I know just 24 hours later, I would realize he was actually attacked by wolves. Then there was the romance, the feelings that we had for each other, all interrupted and halted by the fact that I watched him turn from a man into an enormous wolf. It didn’t sound like a true story. In fact, I kept looking over my shoulder, wondering if the cameras and studio audience were going to pop out of the shadows. It would be a lot easier to believe that someone was punking me than to believe that what I had witnessed was actually happening.

But there I was, sitting in the parking lot of the school that all my friends went to, trying to come to terms with everything. In the midst of my deep thoughts, I hadn’t even noticed that one of my students was standing at the driver’s side window. When she tapped on the glass, I jumped. Looking over, I found my favorite 12-year-old student, Ella, giggling at me on the other side. I let out a shuddering breath and forced a smile. The time had passed far too quickly and it was already time for my first lesson.

Opening the door, I smiled at her sweetly. “You scared me.”

She shrugged her shoulders and laughed. “You looked like you were in another world. When my mom dropped me off, I saw you sitting over here so I figured I’d come over and check on you.”

I patted the top of her head as we walked across the parking lot.
